- Jay Dyer vs Ryan Dawson Debate: Theism vs Anti-Theism, Christianity vs Nihilism, Relativism, Atheism at 1:41:43upheld
The council upheld the call: Liam gave away 2 points.
red herring (+2)
“… we get wrapped up in the epistemological question of what is first mind or matter. But, really, when you come to it, it's Christianity was created by Jews to get gentiles to worship a non Jewish god, to abandon their tradition.”
Diogenes: Liam explicitly sets aside the question the debate is about and substitutes an unsupported claim about Christianity's origins, offering no argument bearing on whether theism grounds the transcendentals.- Aristotle uphold: On the record: Liam has no prior standing in this debate — this is his single call-in turn — and the quoted line is itself his entire contribution: an explicit disclaiming of the debate's actual philosophical question in favor of an unsupported substitute claim, so there is no restated position to compare it against, only the diversion itself. Liam explicitly names the actual point on the table ("the epistemological question of what is first mind or matter" — the philosophical debate Jay and Ryan had been having) and then expressly discounts it ("But, really, when you come to it...") in favor of an unsupported historical/conspiratorial claim about Christianity's Jewish origin, which bears no argument on whether theism grounds logic, ethics, or metaphysics. This is the textbook structure of a red herring: acknowledging the live question and substituting an unrelated claim as what "really" matters. The floor condition is satisfied since both Ryan and Jay treat and answer the remark (Ryan pivots to his Zionism point, Jay directly calls the claim "fundamentally ignorant" and dismisses it), so it is not commentary floating unaddressed.
- Socrates uphold: Read blind, found "non sequitur", on the same ledger as the callout. Liam waves away the entire mind-versus-matter debate that had just occupied two hours and asserts, with no evidence or argument offered, that Christianity's Jewish origin as a plot to convert gentiles is what "really" matters. Even granting the historical claim, a religion's origin or the motives of its early founders has no bearing on whether the transcendental or metaphysical arguments discussed are true, so treating it as the thing that settles "when you come to it" is a non sequitur, not a rebuttal to anything argued.
- Plato uphold: On the record: As a one-time caller, Liam has no prior standing in the debate; this single utterance is itself a self-acknowledged deliberate pivot away from the live topic to an unrelated, unsupported claim, matching the fault's definition exactly. Liam explicitly names the debate's actual subject ("the epistemological question of what is first mind or matter") and then deliberately abandons it ("But, really, when you come to it...") for an unsupported claim about Christianity's Jewish origins, framing this substitution as what "really" matters. This meets the red-herring tests: it comes instead of any engagement with the point on the table, it bears nothing on whether theism grounds the transcendentals, and it is offered to close off the actual question rather than continue examining it. The floor requirement is met since Jay directly answers it ("the argument that it's a Christian is a Jewish psyop is just so fundamentally ignorant... it doesn't even really deserve a response").
