  begging the question (+2)
“I don't need an argument for that. The question's posed to you.”
Diogenes: Asked to support his positive claim that deduction and every transcendental category has ontological status, he refuses and presses the demand on Dean anyway, taking the disputed premise as settled.
  • Aristotle uphold: On the record: Cooley has held since the opening a presuppositionalist TAG line demanding Dean account for transcendental preconditions of knowledge, while himself repeatedly declining to argue for his own parallel claim (that these categories have ontological status grounded in a mind) when Dean turns the question back on him; this line is a continuation of that pattern, not a new departure. Dean's demand "what's the argument for that?" targets exactly the premise Cooley's whole TAG rests on (that logic and the other transcendental categories have ontological status requiring grounding). Cooley refuses to supply one ("I don't need an argument for that") and instead treats the claim as already settled, continuing to press Dean with leading questions built on that same unargued premise (immaterial? universal? invariant?) toward his conclusion that a mind must ground it. That is a fair instance of taking a disputed premise as given rather than defending it — begging the question is defensible here, though "dodge" (the same demand for an argument goes unmet after an earlier iteration at 02:46-04:05) fits at least as well since Dean's question is left without an argument on either occasion.
  • Socrates uphold: Read blind, found "dodge", on the same ledger as the callout. Dean asks essentially the same question twice — "What's the argument?" (04:02) and "And the argument is?" (04:55) — pressing Cooley to justify his own claim that logic has ontological status under his worldview; both times Cooley refuses ("I don't need an argument for that") and pivots the burden back onto Dean rather than answering. Unlike Dean's later deferral at 22:02, which named the disputed presupposition (that reality requires spatiotemporal location) and said what had to be settled first, Cooley here gives no such reason, so this is a bare refusal to answer a repeated direct question rather than a legitimate framework objection.
  • Plato uphold: On the record: S0's declared method is TAG: that transcendental preconditions of knowledge (logic, deduction, etc.) have ontological status groundable only in a theistic worldview; here, when pressed for the argument behind that very premise, he refuses and simply reasserts it, which is a departure into unsupported assertion rather than the argued case he gives moments later. At this exact juncture Dean asks S0 to support his own positive claim ("the argument is?"), and S0 answers "I don't need an argument for that. The question's posed to you" — treating as already settled the very premise (that logic/deduction etc. have ontological status requiring grounding) that is the linchpin of the TAG he is in the middle of building, while continuing to demand Dean answer instead. That is a textbook burden-shift dressed as begging the question: the contested premise is asserted as given rather than argued. Dean himself immediately catches this asymmetry ("You just said that you don't need an argument for the positive claim. Really?" at 05:08), which is independently a fair "fallacy spotted" catch on the record; the callout under review targets the very statement that catch is about, so upholding it is consistent with that. It does not undercut the fact that S0 later (06:47-11:44) does supply the fuller argument for logic's ontological status — but at 04:59 itself, in isolation, he explicitly refuses to argue and assumes the disputed premise.

The council upheld the call: Cooley gave away 1 point.
  ad hominem (+1)
“That's what happened here, Chad. This is how low IQ Dean is.”
Diogenes: Turning to the chat to call his opponent low IQ comes in place of an answer to the live burden-of-proof point, not alongside one, and it plays to the crowd.
  • Aristotle uphold: On the record: S0 (Cooley) declared and has held throughout that his TAG method requires him to press opponents on preconditions of knowledge while himself supplying grounding arguments later; here, faced with S1's turnabout challenge that S0 needs an argument for his own positive claim, S0 does not answer that challenge but pivots to an audience-facing recap ("I'll go ahead and fill the chat... Chad") branding Dean "low IQ" before restating his own question — a pattern of crowd-directed insult (knucklehead, dork, beta male, effeminate) that recurs throughout the debate rather than being a one-off. The insult is explicitly addressed to the chat/"Chad" rather than to Dean, satisfies the aim test (playing to the crowd to close rather than continue the exchange), and comes in place of engaging S1's just-made point that Cooley owed his own positive claim an argument — he never answers that turnabout, only re-asserts his original question after the insult. External speculation about Cooley's persona in other, unrelated videos is outside this transcript and does not bear on the record of this debate, so it does not move the verdict; on the transcript itself the label and severity are defensible given the insult's repeated, generic character-attack form recurring across the debate.
  • Socrates uphold: Read blind, found "ad hominem". Dean has just raised a live point on the table (05:08, "you don't need an argument for the positive claim? Really?"), noting Cooley demands justification from him while refusing to give any for his own ontological claim about logic. Instead of answering that charge, Cooley turns to the audience — "That's what happened here, Chad. This is how low IQ Dean is" — and narrates the exchange for the chat rather than engaging it, only then restating his question. The jab substitutes for a reply to Dean's point, says nothing specific to back "low IQ," and is explicitly aimed at the crowd ("fill the chat," "get the likes up" earlier), so it fails all three of the substitution, truth and aim tests; this is one instance of a pattern (knucklehead, beta male, effeminate, dork) that recurs throughout the debate whenever Cooley faces a pointed objection.
  • Plato uphold: On the record: S0 (Cooley) has, since the opening, pursued a presuppositionalist line pressing Dean on preconditions of knowledge; at 05:08 Dean had just turned Cooley's own "no argument needed" concession back on him, and instead of answering that specific challenge, Cooley pivots to address the chat directly ("get the likes up," "fill the chat") and calls Dean "low IQ" before merely repeating his prior question rather than engaging Dean's rebuttal. The jab comes in place of a response to Dean's just-made point (that Cooley exempted his own positive claim from needing an argument), is addressed to the audience rather than the interlocutor, and is a bare character slur with nothing specific backing it — it fails substitution, truth, and aim tests simultaneously, so it is ad hominem rather than rhetoric alongside argument. The outside-debate evidence about Cooley's other videos is not part of this transcript and does not bear on how this specific line functions here, so it does not change the severity.

  misrepresentation (+2)
“So then I say, what's the preconditions of knowledge? He says that, well, the the the I I I don't know. So then I gotta give it to him.”
Diogenes: The transcript shows Dean named his criteria (justified true belief plus defeasibility) and agreed that logic is a precondition of justification; he never said "I don't know."
  • Aristotle uphold: On the record: Cooley has held since the opening a combative TAG framework casting Dean as unable to account for the preconditions of knowledge; this recap continues that framing but crosses from characterization into inventing a quoted admission ("I I I don't know") that Dean never made, a specific departure from the record rather than mere rhetoric. The transcript at [00:58]-[02:09] shows Dean answered every time he was asked for his theory of knowledge and about logic's status ("Logic would be a precondition for justification," "preconditions of justification which could be fulfilled without a god"); he never pleaded ignorance. Cooley's recap to chat, delivered mid-debate while Dean remains on the floor and responds moments later, puts words in Dean's mouth the transcript does not contain, which is misrepresentation properly so called.
  • Socrates uphold: Read blind, found "misrepresentation". Cooley tells the chat that when he asked for the preconditions of knowledge, Dean answered "I I I don't know," but the transcript shows Dean never said this and in fact gave a string of substantive answers throughout this exchange: "Logic would be a precondition for justification" (01:24), "They're preconditions of justification which could be fulfilled without a god" (02:09), and specific claims about deduction's and logic's ontological status (02:46-04:00). Dean is still on the call and continues answering immediately afterward, so this mischaracterization is made on the floor, not about an absent party.
  • Plato uphold: On the record: S0's declared TAG method has him pressing Dean on preconditions of knowledge throughout, and Dean has consistently answered (JTB+defeasibility, logic as precondition of justification); this aside departs from the actual record by recasting Dean's answered exchange as ignorance, which is a misrepresentation rather than a fair recap. The transcript verifier confirms Dean never said "I don't know" — he answered directly each time, stating his JTB(+defeasibility) theory and that logic is "a precondition of justification" ([01:20]-[02:09]). Cooley's aside to the chat at [05:27] falsely recasts that answered exchange as Dean pleading ignorance, and Dean remains on the floor throughout (the live exchange resumes seamlessly right after at [06:01]), so this is not an unanswerable monologue outside the debate but a mischaracterization made mid-exchange of what the opponent actually said.

  begging the question (+2)
“… logic needs something to be grounded because it needs to be grounded in minds. Concepts are held in minds. Right?”
Diogenes: The step to a grounding mind rests on logic being a concept, which Dean had just explicitly denied; the host asserts it without argument ("It is a concept") rather than defending it.
  • Aristotle uphold: On the record: Cooley has held since the opening a TAG framework that logic, as a transcendental precondition, must ultimately be grounded in a mind and traces to God; here he advances that very argument by asserting logic must be grounded in minds because "concepts are held in minds," even though Dean had already explicitly denied moments earlier (06:40-07:04) that logic is a concept, calling it instead a real platonic object. The premise needed to complete Cooley's grounding argument, that logic is a concept, is exactly the point already in dispute and denied by Dean on the record, yet Cooley proceeds as if granted and, once challenged, only reasserts "It is a concept" rather than arguing for it; assuming the contested premise to reach the desired conclusion is a fair instance of begging the question, and it sits at the center of his transcendental argument, supporting major severity.
  • Socrates uphold: Read blind, found "begging the question". Cooley moves from "we discovered logic" to "logic needs something to be grounded... because it needs to be grounded in minds. Concepts are held in minds" — this only follows if logic is itself a concept, but Dean had just explicitly denied that a moment earlier (06:40-42, "No. It's a it's a real thing," not a concept), and Dean immediately protests again ("I said it wasn't a concept") right after this line. Cooley presents the disputed premise as settled ("Right?") to advance his chain toward the mind-dependence conclusion, the same move later repeated almost verbatim at 11:11 which was already flagged as begging the question.
  • Plato uphold: On the record: S0 (Cooley) has held throughout that transcendental preconditions of knowledge (here, logic) must be grounded in a mind, ultimately God's; at this exact moment he advances that chain by asserting "concepts are held in minds" as though "logic is a concept" were already settled, when Dean had just denied it, and when Dean immediately demands the argument ("I said it wasn't a concept. What's the argument?"), Cooley's answer is simply "It is a concept" — a bare reassertion, not a defense. The premise needed to reach "grounded in minds" — that logic is a concept — is exactly the point in dispute at that moment, and Cooley treats it as already granted with a seeking "Right?" rather than arguing for it; this is petitio principii even though he later (from ~10:00) offers a fuller argument for the same premise, since that later argument does not retroactively supply what was missing here.

  straw man (+1)
“Okay. Well, you reject concepts now?”
Diogenes: Dean rejected only the claim that the laws of logic are concepts, not the existence of concepts.
  • Aristotle uphold: On the record: Cooley has held since the opening a combative TAG questioning style that repeatedly recasts Dean's careful, narrow denials into broader claims (seen again shortly after at 08:26-08:30); this line is a small instance of that same recurring tactic rather than an isolated slip, and it is promptly and correctly identified as a distortion by Dean himself. Dean's actual claim was narrow ("I reject that [the laws of logic are a concept]"), and Cooley immediately reframes it as the much broader "you reject concepts now?" — a distortion of the specific denial into a general, easily-mocked position, which Dean has to correct on the spot ("No. I reject that the laws of logic are a concept"). That restate-then-attack-the-broader-version move is a straw man as defined.
  • Socrates uphold: Read blind, found "straw man". Dean's actual claim was narrow — "I reject that [logic is a concept]" — but Cooley recasts it as the far broader and more absurd-sounding "you reject concepts now?", as if Dean were denying the existence of concepts altogether rather than denying one specific application of the term to logic. Dean has to immediately correct the record ("No, I reject that the laws of logic are a concept"), showing the mischaracterization was live and answered on the floor.
  • Plato uphold: On the record: S0's declared TAG framework holds that concepts are mind-dependent and logic must be a concept grounded in a mind; pressing this line by inflating Dean's specific denial into a denial of concepts generally is a small but real mischaracterization of what Dean, on the record, actually said. Dean's actual words were "I reject that [logic is a concept]," a narrow denial specific to the laws of logic, but Cooley immediately reframes this as "you reject concepts now?" — broadening a specific denial into a global one Dean never made. It is brief and Dean corrects it in his very next line ("No. I reject that the laws of logic are a concept because..."), so it is not exploited at length, which fits the "minor" severity already assigned rather than something higher.

  equivocation (+2)
“You said that logic is a irreducible property that exists outside of the causal chain. Is that in it of itself a concept?”
Diogenes: He slides from "your description of logic is a concept" to "logic is a concept"; any description is conceptual, so that cannot show the thing described is one (and he calls Dean a liar on the strength of it).
  • Aristotle uphold: On the record: Cooley has held since the opening a TAG argument that logic must be a "concept" grounded in a mind; here, and again at 08:16 and 10:44-11:08, he treats the fact that any description of logic is itself conceptual as proof that logic itself (the referent) is a concept, sliding between the two senses of "concept" to force the concession, and calling Dean a liar for denying the very equivocation. The move trades on an ambiguity in "concept" (a description being conceptual vs. the described object being a concept) to manufacture Dean's "agreement" that logic is conceptual, which is exactly the confusion Dean later has to unpack with his concept/object-of-thought distinction (16:23-17:08); this is a genuine equivocation central to Cooley's climactic argument, so major (arguably flagrant, given its repetition at 08:16 and 10:55 and its centrality to the "cook" section) is well supported.
  • Socrates overturn: Read blind, found nothing worth calling. Taken on its own, this is a genuine philosophical challenge: is the entity Dean posits, "an irreducible property that exists outside the causal chain," itself merely a conceptual placeholder rather than a mind-independent object? That is a fair question to press against a Platonist ontology, and it is exactly the question Dean later answers with his concept/object-of-thought distinction at 16:23. The fault in this exchange (Cooley overriding Dean's "No" and later claiming agreement) belongs to the following lines, not to this question itself.
  • Plato uphold: On the record: S0 (Cooley) has held since early in the exchange that logic must be a "concept" so that it can be grounded in a mind (God's); this line is the pivot where he tries to establish that premise by treating Dean's verbal description of logic ("an irreducible property outside the causal chain") as proof that logic itself is a concept. The move trades on two senses of "concept" — any description or explanation is necessarily conceptual, but that does nothing to show the thing described (logic) is itself a mind-dependent concept — and Cooley uses this slide (repeated at 08:16 and 10:55, and there calling Dean a "liar" for denying it) as the load-bearing step of his TAG argument, which is exactly what equivocation names.
  • Thesmothetes leave: The dispute is over whether the quoted question itself already enacts the slide from "any description is conceptual" to "the thing described is a concept" (Aristotle and Plato read it as the opening move of a sequence that runs straight into Cooley's explicit "it's all concepts" claim at 10:55-11:08, ignoring Dean's "No"), or whether the equivocation, if it exists, lives only in those later lines and this particular question is a fair philosophical challenge on its own (Socrates). No listed rule tells us how much surrounding context may be read into a quoted line to locate a fallacy versus requiring the quote itself to carry the whole fault, so this is left to judgment.
  • Moderator overturn: Ruled by the archon, 10 October 2026: Cooley is pressing a starting premise, that logic is a concept, and not sliding between two senses of a word; how well he defended it is another matter.

  misrepresentation (+2)
“I just explained you just explained and you agreed that logic is conceptual.”
Diogenes: Dean denied at least four times that the laws of logic are a concept ("I reject that the laws of logic are a concept", "It's not a concept"); he never agreed that logic is conceptual.
  • Aristotle uphold: On the record: Cooley has held since the opening a TAG framework built on extracting concessions from Dean about logic's properties, and has already shown (at 05:29, upheld) a pattern of asserting concessions Dean never made; this line is a continuation of that same tactic, not a one-off, and departs from the actual record of Dean's repeated denials. The record shows Dean denying that logic is a concept repeatedly and explicitly in the moments right before this line ("It's not a concept," "No. It's not."), never once agreeing; Cooley's claim that Dean "agreed that logic is conceptual" is flatly unsupported by the transcript and fits misrepresentation.
  • Socrates uphold: Read blind, found "misrepresentation". Cooley claims Dean "agreed that logic is conceptual," but the transcript shows Dean repeatedly and explicitly denied exactly this — "I said it wasn't a concept" (07:39), "I reject that the laws of logic are a concept" (07:47), and later the sustained concept/object-of-thought distinction (16:23) built specifically to deny that the laws of logic are a concept. Dean is on the floor throughout and goes on to contest this characterization directly, so the claim of agreement is not supported by anything Dean actually said.
  • Plato uphold: On the record: S0's TAG framework needs logic to be conceptual (hence mind-dependent) to run the argument to God's mind; rather than argue Dean into that admission, he simply asserts an agreement Dean never gave, departing from the actual state of the exchange in which Dean had just denied it again. Dean's position of record, restated repeatedly just before this line ("No. It's not [a concept]," "I reject that the laws of logic are a concept"), is that logic is not a concept but an object of thought outside the causal chain; he never agreed logic is conceptual. Cooley's claim "you agreed that logic is conceptual" attributes to Dean a concession the transcript nowhere shows, and Cooley uses this false concession as the hinge to launch directly into his full TAG syllogism moments later ("It's all concepts, you knucklehead" ... "logic can only be grounded in ... God's mind" at 11:11-11:44), making the misattribution load-bearing rather than incidental.

  misrepresentation (+3)
“That's a p and also not p. You just contradicted yourself. That's what I said. We just didn't understand what I No. I did understand what you just said. You you just said that the laws of logic is conceptual.”
Diogenes: This is the third time he has said Dean called the laws of logic conceptual. Dean said only that our representations of them are conceptual, and he denied it again on the spot ("Logic is not conceptual"), so the charged contradiction exists only in the host's restatement.
  • Aristotle uphold: On the record: Cooley has held since the opening a TAG strategy of extracting and then declaring victory on concessions from Dean; this line continues an established pattern within this same debate (already flagged at 10:51) of asserting an agreement Dean never gave and which he denies in the very same breath, so it is a repetition of a fault already on the record, not an isolated slip. Dean explicitly says "Logic is not conceptual" immediately before Cooley claims "you you just said that the laws of logic is conceptual" — the transcript shows the opposite of what is attributed to him, consistent with his standing distinction (from 16:07 onward) between "our understanding" (conceptual) and "the laws of logic themselves" (not conceptual, an object of thought). This is at least the second explicit instance in this transcript of Cooley manufacturing this same false concession (cf. 10:51), which supports the repeated/central-to-the-case reading needed for flagrant.
  • Socrates uphold: Read blind, found "misrepresentation". Dean's position, laid out explicitly at 16:23 and reapplied via the morality analogy at 18:17-18:33, is that our understanding/representation of the laws of logic is conceptual while the laws themselves (the object of thought) are not a concept — a stated distinction, not a contradiction. When Dean reasserts "logic is not conceptual" (19:09), Cooley collapses that distinction and calls it "p and also not p," but nothing in the transcript shows Dean ever asserting flatly that logic itself is a concept; the charge of self-contradiction is manufactured by ignoring the very distinction Dean had repeatedly defended.
  • Plato uphold: On the record: S0's TAG framework requires logic to be conceptual/mind-dependent to run the argument to God's mind; rather than argue Dean out of his stated concept/object-of-thought distinction, Cooley repeatedly asserts an agreement Dean has explicitly and consistently denied, which is a departure into misrepresentation rather than engagement with the distinction on the record. Dean's stated position throughout this stretch (15:47-19:09) draws a clear, repeated distinction between "our understanding of the laws of logic" (which he grants is conceptual) and "the laws of logic" as a mind-independent object of thought (which he denies is conceptual), restating it explicitly moments before ("Logic is not conceptual") at 19:09. Cooley's "you just said that the laws of logic is conceptual" collapses that distinction into the opposite of what Dean said, and this is at least the third time in the transcript itself (10:12, 10:51, 19:12) that Cooley manufactures this same false concession to declare victory, which supports the flagrant severity for repetition and centrality to his "you contradicted yourself" move.

  ad hominem (+1)
“Dean. You're fucking stupid. Dean. Thank you for being stupid. Dean, are you dumb?”
Diogenes: Three insults in a row answer Dean's moral-realism analogy before any reply to it, bear on nothing in the argument, and play to the audience.
  • Aristotle uphold: On the record: Cooley has held throughout a TAG questioning style laced with insults (knucklehead, low IQ, dork), and here, responding to Dean's moral-realism analogy for logic, he opens with three insults directed at Dean before pivoting to an actual substantive rebuttal ("you just proved my point... logic would be conceptual, but then also ontological existence"). The insults are generic character attacks ("are you dumb") not tied to any specific demonstrated failure at the moment they are uttered, failing the relevance test, and are not backed by anything specific until the argument that follows; because a substantive reply does immediately follow, this is less a full substitution than the crowd-directed monologues elsewhere in the debate, so minor severity (as called) fits better than a higher severity, and external commentary about other, unrelated videos is outside this transcript and does not affect the verdict.
  • Socrates uphold: Read blind, found "ad hominem". Dean has just given a genuine argument-by-analogy (18:17-18:33, moral realism as a parallel to Platonic realism about logic), and Cooley's first response is a triple insult — "You're fucking stupid," "Thank you for being stupid," "are you dumb?" — before any content. This fails relevance (Dean's intelligence bears nothing on whether the morality analogy succeeds) and truth (no specifics offered), and unlike the Euthyphro example it is not mockery attached to a completed refutation: the argument that follows ("you contradicted yourself") was already found at 19:12 to rest on a misrepresentation of Dean's actual, non-contradictory concept/object-of-thought position, so the insult dresses up a flawed rebuttal rather than crowning a sound one.
  • Plato uphold: On the record: S0 (Cooley) has, across the debate, repeatedly resorted to personal denigration ("low IQ," "knucklehead," "effeminate") woven into his TAG-pressing exchanges; here, immediately upon Dean offering his moral-realism analogy, Cooley's first response is three stacked insults ("fucking stupid," "thank you for being stupid," "are you dumb") before any engagement with the analogy's content. The insults are the immediate reply to Dean's specific analogy, bear on nothing about its logical content, and are unsubstantiated by anything specific — even though substantive engagement follows moments later, the analogy itself is met first with pure denigration rather than a response to its content, which fits the pattern of ad hominem already established repeatedly in this debate; minor severity is appropriate since argument does resume immediately after.

  straw man (+2)
“So your intuitions make it true? I have an intuition that you're wrong in this debate. Does that make it true?”
Diogenes: Dean offered intuition as what justifies his belief, the J in his justified-true-belief account, not as what makes it true; the host attacks a truth-making claim Dean never made.
  • Aristotle uphold: On the record: Cooley has held since the opening a TAG questioning style that repeatedly collapses Dean's careful distinctions (justification vs. truth, concept vs. object of thought) into cruder equivalences to score easy points; this line continues that same established pattern rather than departing from it, and it mischaracterizes what Dean actually offered as his justification. Dean's actual claim was that intuition serves as the justification (the J) for his justified-true-belief account ("The fact that I have an intuition that it is the case and I believe [it]"), not that intuition makes a proposition true. Cooley's "so your intuitions make it true?" converts a justification-claim into a truth-making claim Dean never made, then attacks that converted claim — the same restate-then-attack move already found to be a straw man at 07:44 and a misrepresentation pattern at 10:51/19:12.
  • Socrates overturn: Read blind, found nothing worth calling. Dean has just answered "how do you know that" with "I have an intuition that it is the case and I believe [it]"; Cooley's question and the flying-dogs analogy that follows is a fair, direct test of whether an intuition-based justification is sufficient to guarantee truth, a genuine and well-known challenge to intuitionist epistemology that Dean himself concedes ("No, it doesn't") and which his own defeasibility condition is designed to answer. It is a pointed dialectical question rather than a misrepresentation of what Dean said or a fully stated argument, so nothing on either ledger is shown.
  • Plato uphold: On the record: Cooley's declared line of attack is to press Dean on what grounds/justifies his epistemic claims about logic; here he departs from engaging Dean's actual JTB+intuition-as-justifier position by substituting a truth-making claim Dean never made and refuting that instead. Dean's stated framework is phenomenal conservatism: intuition provides prima facie justification for belief, not a truth-maker; and his answer here is explicitly to Cooley's own justification question ("What justifies that being true? How do you know it?") — he answers with what justifies him, "the fact that I have an intuition." Cooley then reframes this justification-claim as a truth-making claim ("So your intuitions make it true?"), a position Dean never advanced, and repeats the same mischaracterization immediately after with the "dogs can fly" example, which supports treating it as more than a one-off aside.
  • Thesmothetes overturn: By the rule: even if: granting the claim and showing the conclusion fails. Dean had just named intuition as the justification (the J) for his belief; Cooley's question and the flying-dogs analogy grants that premise — intuition serves as justification — and tests whether justification of that kind is sufficient to secure truth, exactly the gap JTB frameworks and the Gettier problem are built to expose. Dean's own reply, "No, it doesn't," treats the analogy as a substantive point to be answered rather than a mischaracterization to be corrected, showing the move landed as an even-if test of sufficiency, not an attack on a truth-making claim Dean never made.
