The council overturned the call, so no points were given away.
“And and likewise, people should resist authoritarian government if the government's trying to tell them what medical procedures they can and cannot have.”
Diogenes: Read blind, without being shown any call on this passage. Throughout this stretch Styx's actual case has been a harm-reduction argument - that banning does not stop abortion but pushes it into coat-hanger back-alley methods that kill and sterilize more women, so legal medical access reduces the death toll. At 25:31 Jay collapses that into a bare "people will get around the law so it's fine" and likens it to Kinsey justifying child molestation for research; the comparison answers a caricature of Styx's reasoning (mere permissiveness) rather than the harm-reduction claim he had actually been making, so it lands as a mischaracterization rather than a refutation of the argument on the table.- Aristotle overturn: On the record: Styx has held since the opening that government should not dictate medical decisions and that private/individual resistance to authoritarian overreach is the proper check; this line is a direct restatement of that standing position, not a characterization of Jay's argument. The quoted line is not a characterization of Jay's or anyone's argument at all; it is Styx simply asserting, in his own voice, that people should resist government dictating medical procedures. A straw man requires distorting an opponent's stated position, and there is no opponent's claim being restated or recast here — the referee's own reasoning in fact discusses Jay's earlier Kinsey comparison (25:31) mischaracterizing Styx, not anything Styx does to Jay in this line. Whatever the merits of that separate exchange, this quote itself contains no element of misrepresentation of an opponent.
- Socrates overturn: Read blind, found nothing worth calling. This is simply the practical application of the counterbalancing-power thesis Styx has held since the opening (no single pole of power, public or private, should go unchecked, and unenforceable/overreaching laws should not be made), applied here to medical decisions. There is no fallacy or misrepresentation in stating a position consistent with the framework already on record.
- Plato overturn: On the record: S0 has held since the opening (02:07-02:44, 06:16-06:23, 08:02-08:16, 11:41) that government should not dictate medical procedures and that private/citizen resistance to such overreach is legitimate; the quoted line at 29:20 is a plain restatement of that standing position and makes no claim at all about what Jay or anyone else argued. The quoted words are S0 restating his own long-held position, not characterizing or misattributing any claim to an opponent, so they cannot constitute a straw man; the referee's own supporting reasoning in fact discusses a wholly different exchange (Jay's Kinsey analogy at 25:31, already adjudicated separately) rather than anything said in this quote.
