Appeal: false claim

- #20562:03:56upheld Isla claim: false claim (+1)
The council upheld the finding: Isla gave away 1 point on Alētheia, the tally of checked facts.
The claim, as Thucydides noted it: Women die all the time from crossing state/country borders to get abortions.
Diogenes: Thucydides (verifier): unsupported. Isla's claim (actually at 123:54, not 140:01) that "women die all the time" from crossing state or country borders for abortions names no source. The Guttmacher Institute, the standard tracker of interstate abortion travel, documents rising volumes of travel (over 160,000 patients in 2023) but records no pattern of deaths from the act of crossing borders to obtain the procedure, and legal abortion carries a very low mortality rate generally. No available public-health source substantiates the claim as stated, so it stands unsupported.- Aristotle overturn: On the record: Isla's declared method throughout is to counter the hosts' framing with concrete distinctions and lived-reality counterexamples rather than bare assertion; this remark continues that pattern in response to Myron's "you can easily drive over the border" line. The transcript shows Isla initially understood "over the border" as crossing an international border (she is surprised when Myron clarifies moments later "Not Mexico... over the border like another state"), so her remark was about unsafe cross-border/unsafe abortion mortality generally, not 2023 US interstate travel; the verifier's source (Guttmacher's post-Dobbs domestic interstate-travel report) neither matches what she meant nor the 2021 pre-Dobbs setting of this debate, so the check does not bear on the claim as actually made.
- Socrates uphold: Read blind, found "hasty generalisation", on the same ledger as the callout. Isla asserts as flat, unqualified fact that "women die all the time from over the border abortions," with no citation, source, or qualification — the same kind of sweeping, unsupported claim I've flagged against Myron throughout this debate (122:35, 132:45, 143:47). It also answers a claim Myron hadn't yet clarified (he meant driving to another U.S. state, not crossing into another country), though that mismatch reads as a genuine confusion over his ambiguous phrasing rather than a deliberate distortion.
- Plato uphold: On the record: Isla's position in this stretch has been to resist Myron's claim that obtaining an abortion is straightforwardly "easy," and this hyperbolic claim about deaths from border-crossing for abortion care is part of that pushback; the exchange itself shows some confusion over whether "over the border" meant another state or another country, but even once Myron clarified he meant interstate travel within the US, Isla did not walk back or qualify the death claim. The verifier's check is sound: no source was named, and the best available data (Guttmacher's tracking of interstate abortion travel) show no pattern of deaths tied to the act of traveling for legal abortion care, which remains a very low-mortality procedure; the claim as stated is not borne out and nothing in the transcript shows Isla correcting it once the "another state, not Mexico" clarification was made.
