- #222021:51overturned Jay Dyer claim: misused source (+1)
The council overturned the finding, so nothing is marked against Jay Dyer.
The claim, as Thucydides noted it: James White did not accept a debate on the Trinity and divine simplicity, the topic Jay Dyer has offered him for many years; White instead offered to debate on icons, provided Dyer was within driving distance of his RV.
Diogenes: Thucydides (verifier): not found; the source does not bear what is drawn from it. At 21:37–21:54 Dyer says White "offered to debate on icons if you are within driving distance of my RV." I found no White statement, post, or recording of this offer. Search results only show Dyer offering icon debates to others, such as David Wood. The claim rests on Dyer's own account, which is one side's report. It cannot show that Protestants who say Dyer turned down a debate are "lying," because that depends on what each side offered and refused, and I could not check that.- Aristotle overturn: On the record: Jay Dyer opened as host of an open forum and has held since 16:06 that Protestants avoid debating him while he offers various forms; the White anecdote is consistent with that position and does not depart from it. The verifier's finding is "not found", so it adds nothing and the call is judged without it. Dyer reports a first-hand account of a past exchange and cites no source. The record does not show the account is false, misquoted or misread, and a claim that can't be checked is not thereby wrong. A fault has to be shown, so the call is overturned.
- Socrates overturn: Read blind, found nothing worth calling. This is Jay's monologue about James White, who is not on the floor. No opponent answers it in the exchange, so the rubric says not to judge commentary about someone absent. It is also a narrative of a past dispute over debate topics, not an argument against a live point.
- Plato overturn: On the record: Jay Dyer opened as host of an open forum, declared no thesis, and has held a running complaint that Protestants dodge debates with him; the White/icons line is his own report of that complaint and fits it rather than departing from it. The verifier's finding is "not found", and the rubric says to judge such a claim as if there were no finding. The line is Dyer's first-person account of what White offered. Nothing in the debate shows it false, and no source is being misused. A failure to find a primary record does not show the claim is wrong. Whether it is true is a toss-up, so the call is overturned.
The bench voted on this, and its verdict is kept as it was given. It does not vote on the calls of a call-in show now, and nothing there counts on anybody’s record.
