- #22331:05:17upheld S5 claim: misused source (+1)
The council upheld the finding, but nothing on this stream goes on anyone’s record.
The claim, as Thucydides noted it: For a long time Mormonism had only one systematic theologian, James Talmage, and there is only one systematic theology in Mormonism.
Diogenes: Thucydides (verifier): contested; the source does not bear what is drawn from it. Talmage's Articles of Faith is a real, influential systematic treatment. But it is not the only one. Parley Pratt's Key to the Science of Theology, Orson Pratt's systematic essays, Roberts's Seventy's Course and McConkie's Mormon Doctrine are all systematic works, so "only one systematic theologian" is overstated. I did not open the texts in this check; this rests on my own knowledge of them. The inference that Mormonism is not well thought out also fails. The number of systematic works says little about internal consistency, and the speaker offers no source on that point.- Aristotle uphold: On the record: Jay Dyer opened as host of an open forum and has held a dismissive, presuppositionalist, anti-Western-establishment stance toward rival systems; the Mormon remark is a passing aside consistent with that and not a departure. The claim that Mormonism had only one systematic theologian is overstated: Parley and Orson Pratt, Roberts and McConkie all wrote systematic works. The speaker hedged with "maybe there's a new one now", but the flat claim was relied on to conclude that Mormonism is not well thought out. The verifier's finding is marked contested and rests on the verifier's own recall, but the Pratt and McConkie counterexamples are well known, so I judge it more likely than not that the claim is faulty.
- Socrates overturn: Read blind, found nothing worth calling. This is a factual aside inside Jay's reply to the Mormon caller, offered to support his remark that Mormonism is not well thought out. The caller does not dispute it, so nothing contested is left standing as a bare assertion. The Talmage claim is roughly accurate, and it is not a fault of reasoning.
- Plato uphold: On the record: Jay Dyer opened as host of an open forum, declared no thesis beyond Orthodox presuppositionalism, and has held a pattern of polemic against rivals and dismissal of callers; the Mormon theology line fits that polemic and does not depart from it. The claim that Mormonism had only one systematic theologian (Talmage) is overstated: Parley and Orson Pratt, Roberts and McConkie all wrote systematic works. It was said without objection and not corrected, and nothing was offered to support it, so the claim is false as stated.
The bench voted on this, and its verdict is kept as it was given. It does not vote on the calls of a call-in show now, and nothing there counts on anybody’s record.
