- #22511:53:21upheld Fr. Ananias claim: false claim (+1)
The council upheld the finding, but nothing on this stream goes on anyone’s record.
The claim, as Thucydides noted it: John Behr was dismissed from St. Vladimir's Seminary, where he was dean and had placed an icon of Origen behind him in his office.
Diogenes: Thucydides (verifier): unsupported; the source does not bear what is drawn from it. Behr was dean of St. Vladimir's from 2007 to 2017. He then became Georges Florovsky Distinguished Professor of Patristics and later took the Regius chair at Aberdeen. The search results show a normal transition and nothing about a dismissal or an icon of Origen in his office. The speaker said "I think he was dismissed" and named no source. The inference that he is a liberal rehabilitating Origen is an opinion. Behr has written sympathetically on Origen, but that doesn't make the dismissal true.- Aristotle uphold: On the record: Fr. Ananias joined as a caller and Orthodox-sympathetic commenter, agreeing with Jay Dyer's anti-Rome and anti-liberal stance. He took no separate thesis, and the called line is a flat factual claim about Behr that fits that stance without departing from it. Fr. Ananias asserted that Behr was dismissed from St. Vladimir's and put an icon of Origen in his office, and he named no source. The hedge "I think" does not undo the assertion, and he did not correct it. The verifier found Behr served as dean from 2007 to 2017 and then moved to a professorship, which is a normal transition and not a dismissal. The record does not support the claim.
- Socrates overturn: Read blind, found nothing worth calling. Fr. Ananias gives a hedged factual aside ("I think he was dismissed") about John Behr, who is not on the floor. The caller and Jay do not dispute it, and it is not an argument against any live point. Under the floor rule it isn't judged, and nothing in it is a reasoning fault.
- Plato uphold: On the record: Fr. Ananias joined as a caller-turned-co-host who declared no thesis of his own and has echoed Jay Dyer's Orthodox polemic; the called line is a stated factual claim about Behr that he did not retract, so it does not depart from his stance but is a checkable claim. The verifier found Behr's departure from St. Vladimir's was a normal transition after his deanship (2007–2017), with no dismissal and no Origen icon on record. The speaker hedged ("I think") but then asserted the dismissal and the icon detail as fact, with no source and no correction. The claim is unsupported by the checked record.
The bench voted on this, and its verdict is kept as it was given. It does not vote on the calls of a call-in show now, and nothing there counts on anybody’s record.
