- #22552:12:12upheld Jay Dyer claim: false claim (+1)
The council upheld the finding, but nothing on this stream goes on anyone’s record.
The claim, as Thucydides noted it: George Soros brags that in the 1980s he worked with the CIA and the Reagan administration to sponsor and perfect the color revolutions (the Orange Revolution in Ukraine, the Rose Revolution, Otpor in Serbia, and the 2009 Green Revolution in Iran under Ahmadinejad).
Diogenes: Thucydides (verifier): unsupported; the source does not bear what is drawn from it. I did not open the book. Engdahl is a critic who alleges Soros and U.S. agencies were behind color revolutions. His book is not a record of Soros "bragging" about working with the CIA and Reagan in the 1980s. Soros has publicly acknowledged funding democracy groups, including in Georgia and Serbia. As far as I know, he has never said he worked with the CIA to sponsor or perfect color revolutions, which began in 2000 in Serbia. He also has no known claim about the 2009 Iran Green Movement. Even if the claim were true, one man's role would not show that "all color revolutions are CIA strategies."- Aristotle uphold: On the record: Jay Dyer opened as host of an open forum, then held a presuppositionalist Orthodox stance with conspiratorial, anti-establishment news commentary; the Soros line fits that stance and does not depart from it, but it is a flat factual claim. Dyer said Soros "brags about it" and worked with the CIA and Reagan in the 1980s to perfect the color revolutions. He offered nothing for this beyond Engdahl's book, which is a critic's allegation and not a record of Soros bragging. The color revolutions began in 2000, and Soros is not known to have said anything about the 2009 Iran Green Movement. Nobody objected to the claim, and Dyer did not correct it. The verifier's finding holds: the claim is unsupported.
- Socrates overturn: Read blind, found nothing worth calling. This is part of Jay's monologue on color revolutions. No opponent on the floor answers or disputes it, so the floor rule applies and it isn't judged. The Soros-CIA claim is a dubious factual assertion, and the 1980s dating doesn't fit the later revolutions it names, but that is for the verifier to find. It is not a fault of reasoning.
- Plato uphold: On the record: Jay Dyer opened as host of an open forum, declared Eastern Orthodoxy and presuppositional method, and has held a running pattern of polemic and geopolitical conspiracy commentary; the Soros/CIA claim is more of that commentary and departs from nothing he held. Soros has acknowledged funding democracy groups, but not working with the CIA and Reagan in the 1980s to perfect color revolutions. The claim also bundles in the 2009 Iran Green Revolution, which doesn't fit. Nothing in the debate supports it, and Jay didn't correct it. The verifier's finding holds, so the claim is unsupported.
The bench voted on this, and its verdict is kept as it was given. It does not vote on the calls of a call-in show now, and nothing there counts on anybody’s record.
