- #22632:25:30upheld Jay Dyer claim: false claim (+1)
The council upheld the finding, but nothing on this stream goes on anyone’s record.
The claim, as Thucydides noted it: All Protestantism believes in penal substitutionary atonement and in the filioque.
Diogenes: Thucydides (verifier): unsupported; the source does not bear what is drawn from it. Dyer says at 145:29 that "all Protestantism... believes in the doctrine of penal substitutionary atonement... the filioque," and he names no source. Most Reformation confessions do teach the filioque, and penal substitution is dominant among Reformed and evangelical Protestants. "All" overstates it. Many Protestants reject or do not hold penal substitution, favoring Christus Victor or moral-influence views. Some Anglican and other Protestant bodies have also moved to drop or bracket the filioque. The inference that these doctrines "cut out" the Orthodox Trinity is an Orthodox theological judgment. It is Dyer's own tradition's reading, not a fact a source establishes.- Aristotle uphold: On the record: Jay Dyer opened as host of an open forum and has held a presuppositionalist Orthodox stance that Protestantism and Rome are false systems; the called universal claim about Protestant belief fits that stance and does not depart from it. "All Protestantism" is a flat universal stated without support. Many Protestants reject penal substitution, and some bodies have bracketed the filioque. The verifier's finding holds, and I ruled the same way on the matching 142:25 claim. The error is one of fact and costs him on Alētheia, not on the reasoning ledgers.
- Socrates uphold: Read blind, found "bare assertion", on the same ledger as the callout. Jay says all Protestantism holds penal substitution and the filioque, then claims these cut out the true Trinity. He gives no reason or source for the universal claim, and Trap, the caller, asked a direct question. Jay then sends him to old videos instead of arguing the point, so the claim is relied on as established.
- Plato uphold: On the record: Jay Dyer opened as host of an open forum, declared Eastern Orthodoxy and a presuppositionalist method, and has held a running polemic against Rome and Protestantism; the "all Protestantism" line is more of that polemic and does not depart from it. "All Protestantism" believes in penal substitution is a universal claim that is factually wrong, since many Protestants reject penal substitution and some bodies have dropped or bracketed the filioque. Dyer did not correct it. A similar sweeping claim (every Protestant holds to penal substitution) was already upheld at 142:25. The verifier's finding holds, and this is a minor overstatement.
The bench voted on this, and its verdict is kept as it was given. It does not vote on the calls of a call-in show now, and nothing there counts on anybody’s record.
