- #22762:47:45upheld Jay Dyer claim: false claim (+1)
The council upheld the finding, but nothing on this stream goes on anyone’s record.
The claim, as Thucydides noted it: All the church fathers read the Old Testament accounts of God ordering executions literally, with the exception of Origen, who did not read them that way.
Diogenes: Thucydides (verifier): unsupported; the source does not bear what is drawn from it. Speaker S5 says at 167:43, "Origen did not read it that way," which implies that every other father read these passages literally. No source is named. The fathers' record is mixed. Most affirmed that the events happened, and Augustine defended God's commands to kill as just. But many also read the same passages allegorically or spiritually, including Gregory of Nyssa, Ambrose, Didymus, Cyril of Alexandria and Augustine himself. Origen is the best-known allegorist, not the only one. So the claim that all the others read them literally is too broad. The inference that anyone who rejects a literal reading follows Origen alone does not follow. I did not open the primary texts in this check, so this rests on the standard patristic record.- Aristotle uphold: On the record: Jay Dyer opened as host of an open forum with a presuppositionalist Orthodox stance against Rome, Protestantism and rival systems, and has held it; the called line is an offhand universal claim about the Fathers that fits that stance and does not depart from it. The universal claim that every Father except Origen read the executions literally is stated flatly with no source. The patristic record does not support it: Gregory of Nyssa, Ambrose and Augustine, among others, also read these passages allegorically. The verifier's finding holds, and nobody objected or corrected it.
- Socrates overturn: Read blind, found nothing worth calling. Jay is telling an anecdote about arguments he had in 2007 as part of answering a caller's question about the death penalty. The caller doesn't dispute the patristic claim. It is a sweeping factual aside with its own exception (Origen) named, and it is a hasty-generalisation-adjacent claim at most. It is not an argument any opponent on the floor is contesting, so nothing is shown that is worth calling.
- Plato uphold: On the record: Jay Dyer opened as host of an open forum, declared Eastern Orthodoxy with a presuppositionalist method, and has held a running polemic and a habit of sweeping offhand historical claims; the Origen-only exception line is one more such claim and does not depart from that pattern. The claim that all the fathers read these passages literally except Origen is too broad. Gregory of Nyssa, Ambrose and others also read them allegorically, and Jay named no source. The verifier's finding holds, so the claim is overbroad and unsupported, though only a minor error.
The bench voted on this, and its verdict is kept as it was given. It does not vote on the calls of a call-in show now, and nothing there counts on anybody’s record.
