- #22773:17:12overturned Jay Dyer claim: false claim (+1)
The council overturned the finding, so nothing is marked against Jay Dyer.
The claim, as Thucydides noted it: The Mormon church made $25 billion in profits in the market last year.
Diogenes: Thucydides (verifier): unsupported. No source was named. The Tribune's reporting on the church's disclosed stock fund puts it at about $60.9 billion, up roughly $30 billion since early 2020 and a 14.1% return in one reported period. A $25 billion single-year market profit would be a gain of more than 40% on that disclosed fund, and no reported figure matches it. The church's total finances are not disclosed, so the number can't be verified, but it is not supported by any public record I found.- Aristotle overturn: On the record: S0 declared no thesis in the debate; the line is a voice inside a clip Jay Dyer played about Mormon church finances, so it is not a position S0 opened with or held, and it departs from nothing. The words come from a played recording, which the rubric says is not the speaker's own argument. No opponent was on the floor to answer them. This matches my earlier ruling on the S12 clip at 88:30. The verifier's finding may be right about the figure, but the fault does not attach to S0.
- Socrates overturn: Read blind, found nothing worth calling. The line is a played clip of someone else (S8 and others), inside Jay's monologue on Tim Tebow and church tax schemes. It is not the speaker's own argument, and no opponent on the floor answers it. The floor rule and the rule on recordings both apply, so nothing is judged.
- Plato overturn: On the record: S0 declared no thesis at the opening and has held none; the $25 billion line is a voice in a played clip (continued by S8), not S0's own position, so it neither departs from nor fits any held line. The line comes from a played recording, and words played from a clip are not the speaker's argument; I overturned the clip-voice call at 88:30 on the same ground. Jay Dyer's own later restatement ("32,000,000,000") is a separate line, not the one called.
The bench voted on this, and its verdict is kept as it was given. It does not vote on the calls of a call-in show now, and nothing there counts on anybody’s record.
