- #23992:09overturned Jay Dyer claim: false claim (+1)
The council overturned the finding, so nothing is marked against Jay Dyer.
The claim, as Thucydides noted it: Jeffrey Dahmer had recording equipment in his apartment, which no one talks about.
Diogenes: Thucydides (verifier): unsupported. No source was named, and the transcript has nothing said between 00:00 and 04:20, so I could not check the claim against the debate itself. Accounts of the apartment's evidence describe about 80 Polaroids, a camera, tools, chemicals and body parts. They list no audio or video recording equipment. The only nearby item is VHS tapes in a fan blog, which is not an official inventory. The claim that he had recording equipment "which no one talks about" is not borne out. The Polaroid camera is the likely kernel, and a camera is not recording equipment in the ordinary sense. I did not read the primary police inventory or trial exhibit lists, so this is "unsupported" and not a firm refutation.- Aristotle overturn: On the record: Dyer opened as an Orthodox Christian conspiratorial commentator who says serial killers are tied to hidden networks that official history conceals. The Dahmer recording-equipment remark is in that vein, and it was offered as a suspicion rather than as settled fact. At 129:35 Dyer's wording was a garbled "if in the case of Jeffrey, he had, recording equipment…". At 167:21 he said the video cameras in the apartment suggested "presumably" snuff material. The documentary on the floor drew on survivor testimony about the apartment, and Dyer framed it as a suspicion. Thucydides checked only inventories and a Polaroid camera, not that testimony, and read nothing of the passage itself. Whether the claim is false or merely unproven is a toss-up, so the call is overturned.
- Socrates overturn: Read blind, found nothing worth calling. This is Dyer's solo commentary with no opponent on the floor, so the floor rule bars a call. The line is consistent with my earlier rulings on his monologue.
- Plato overturn: On the record: Jay Dyer opened with conspiratorial cultural commentary about intelligence-state and occult networks behind serial killers, and has held it throughout; this aside about recording equipment in Dahmer's apartment serves that thesis and does not depart from it. The line is half-formed and framed conditionally ("Because if in the case of Jeffrey, he had, recording equipment..."). Later he speaks of "presumably" snuff and cameras, so it is a speculative aside he did not present as established fact. Thucydides found only that the claim is unsupported. He did not refute it, and he did not read the primary police inventory. Whether this was a flat false factual claim is a toss-up, so I overturn it.
The bench voted on this, and its verdict is kept as it was given. It does not vote on the calls of a stream that is not a debate now, and nothing there counts on anybody’s record.
