- #24042:43overturned Jay Dyer claim: false claim (+1)
The council overturned the finding, so nothing is marked against Jay Dyer.
The claim, as Thucydides noted it: The Phoenix program was on record as a military program to train and create assassins.
Diogenes: Thucydides (verifier): unsupported. Phoenix was a CIA-run, US and South Vietnamese program to identify and "neutralize" the Viet Cong infrastructure. Its record includes captures, interrogations, torture and killings, and the 1971 hearings aired the assassination charges. It was not a program "on record" to train and create assassins, which is Dyer's claim at 163:44. I did not open a primary document, so this rests on general knowledge. The claim reads as a stretch used to link Dahmer to such programs. Dahmer was an Army medic in Germany, and no record puts him in Phoenix.- Aristotle overturn: On the record: Jay Dyer opened as an Orthodox Christian conspiratorial commentator who says military and intelligence programs help produce killers and that official history hides this. He has held that throughout, and his remark about Phoenix is that thesis applied, so it does not depart from his position. Phoenix is on the historical record as a CIA and military program of targeted killing and "neutralization", and the 1971 hearings aired assassination charges. Dyer's loose phrasing "to train and create assassins" overstates it, but the core, that Phoenix was on record as an assassination-type program, is not shown false. The verifier's finding rests on general knowledge and mostly objects to how Dyer used the program to link Dahmer to it. It is a toss-up whether the claim is false or only imprecise, so the call is overturned.
- Socrates overturn: Read blind, found nothing worth calling. This is Dyer's solo commentary over a played documentary, with no opponent on the floor to answer or be answered. The floor rule bars a call. This is consistent with my earlier rulings on his monologue lines.
- Plato overturn: On the record: Jay Dyer opened with conspiratorial commentary about intelligence-state programs behind serial killers, and has held it throughout. The called line, that Phoenix was on record as an assassination program, is a core piece of that thesis, not a departure from it. Elsewhere he says Dahmer was not in Phoenix and might be in a continuation of it. Phoenix's killings were aired in the 1971 hearings, and Colby admitted to them, so calling it an on-record assassination program is largely sound. "Train and create assassins" stretches the record, but the verifier's claim of falsity is weak and he did not open a primary document. Whether a clear fault occurred is a toss-up, so the call is overturned. His later add-ons, such as cannibalism and a Dahmer link, are separate lines.
The bench voted on this, and its verdict is kept as it was given. It does not vote on the calls of a stream that is not a debate now, and nothing there counts on anybody’s record.
