- #24283:15:57overturned Jay Dyer claim: false claim (+1)
The council overturned the finding, so nothing is marked against Jay Dyer.
The claim, as Thucydides noted it: Gary Heidnik's military records reveal connections to drug use, specifically high-powered hallucinogens.
Diogenes: Thucydides (verifier): unsupported. The speaker (S1, at 195:57) says Heidnik's "military records later reveal" "high powered hallucinogens." I found no military record showing this. The accounts say Heidnik was a medic stationed at Landstuhl, Germany, and was discharged in 1962 with a schizoid personality diagnosis after he was given trifluoperazine. The only hallucinogen item is his friend John Cassidy's report that Heidnik claimed the Army gave him LSD. That is hearsay, not a record. The claim's source is also unnamed, so I rate it unsupported. I did not read the primary file and did not open the pages, so this rests on search summaries only.- Aristotle overturn: On the record: Jay Dyer opened as an Orthodox Christian conspiratorial commentator who ties serial killers to military drug and intelligence programs. He has held that throughout, and the Heidnik line is that thesis applied. The words are read from the documentary he was reacting to, so they do not depart from his position. The line about military records revealing hallucinogen use is the documentary's text, which Dyer reads and paraphrases over the played video. The same passage appears a few lines later in the narrator's voice, with the LSD experiment claim. I overturned the neighbouring Heidnik line on this ground. The verifier's finding that the claim is unsupported by the Heidnik accounts may be right about the documentary. But the verifier found that Heidnik reportedly claimed Army LSD treatment, so there is some basis, and the verifier did not read the primary file. It is a toss-up that Dyer made the false claim as his own, so the call is overturned.
- Socrates overturn: Read blind, found nothing worth calling. This is Dyer's solo commentary over a played documentary, with no opponent on the floor to answer or be answered. The floor rule bars a call. It is consistent with my earlier rulings on his monologue lines.
- Plato overturn: On the record: Jay Dyer opened with conspiratorial cultural commentary about military and intelligence programs behind serial killers, and has held it throughout. The called line is a recap of a Heidnik parallel he took from the Dahmer documentary, so it serves the thesis and does not depart from it. The wording comes from the documentary he was reacting to. Its narration says "from Gary Heidnik's history, it was clear that his first psychosis was facilitated by a near lethal dose of hallucinogenic substance given to him while he was in Germany in the military." The verifier admits the finding rests on search summaries, with no primary file read. Heidnik's alleged army LSD dosing is reported in the case literature. Whether a clear fault occurred is a toss-up, and I overturned the neighbouring Heidnik recap, so the call is overturned.
The bench voted on this, and its verdict is kept as it was given. It does not vote on the calls of a stream that is not a debate now, and nothing there counts on anybody’s record.
