Appeal: false claim

- #25004:36:10not voted on: a call-in show Jay Dyer claim: false claim (+1)
Not voted on: a call-in show, so nothing counts.
The claim, as Thucydides noted it: Philip K. Dick's novel Ubik predicted the Internet.
Diogenes: Thucydides (verifier): unsupported; the source does not bear what is drawn from it. Ubik is set in 1992 and is about telepathy, precognition, cold-sleep "half-life," and a reality that decays. It has coin-operated doors and talking appliances, but no network of linked computers or anything like the Internet. S3 at 276:04 claims Dick "predestined that by 1992 ... the Internet," and S0 agrees at 276:10 with "Ubik is super prophetic," but neither names a passage. The "predicted the Internet" idea attached to Dick comes from viral listicles and from his later VALIS-era writing about information networks, not from a text in Ubik. I did not open the novel for this check, so this rests on my knowledge of it.Thucydides (verifier) checked this claim. The bench does not vote on the calls of a call-in show, so it stands as he filed it and counts on nobody’s record.
