Appeal: internal critique
From Fr. Ananias and Jay Dyer vs Matt Slick: Orthodoxy vs Protestantism Debate.
- #26001:52:47upheld Fr. Ananias epainos: internal critique (+2)
The council upheld the call: Fr. Ananias earned 2 points.
“So everything that Matt said about scripture, I can apply…”
Diogenes: Ananias takes Slick's own ground for Scripture (the Spirit's witness and God's providence) and shows it would equally vouch for the councils, so Slick's rejection of the councils cannot rest on it.major: It turns Slick's own method against his demand that the councils prove themselves, and he states the derivation.
- Aristotle uphold: On the record: Fr. Ananias declared at 06:02 that citing Scripture begs the question until the canon and interpretation are justified, and he has held that throughout; at 112:47 he turns Slick's own ground for Scripture against him, which fits that stance and does not depart from it. All three elements are in the record. Slick's own premises are the Spirit's witness and God's providence (07:40, 13:00, 109:40). Ananias states the derivation: the same method would vouch for the councils (112:33–112:53). Slick rejects that conclusion, and his reply at 113:34 answers only by adding Scripture. Slick never says why the councils differ in the respect that matters, so the critique stands.
- Socrates uphold: Read blind, found "internal critique". Ananias takes Slick's own ground for Scripture, the Spirit's inner witness and God's sovereign preservation, and shows that it would equally license the councils, so Slick's rejection of the councils cannot rest on that ground. The premises come from Slick's record at 13:04 and 53:32, and the derivation is stated. He also admits the Spirit was not his only ground ("I didn't only"), and this answers the question put to him.
- Plato uphold: On the record: Fr. Ananias declared at the opening that citing Scripture begs the question until the canon and its interpretation are justified, and he has held that framework objection throughout; the called line applies Slick's own ground for Scripture to the councils and does not depart from that position. The premises are Slick's own: he rests Scripture on God's sovereignty and providence (Ephesians 1:11) and on the Spirit's witness (John 10:27-28). Ananias says the same method would vouch for the councils. This is internal critique. Slick's reply at 113:34 only adds that he also appeals to Scripture. That does not answer the parity. Slick's own distinction, that the councils are not inspired, is not argued from this ground, so it cannot rest on it. Ananias does state the derivation, though briefly.
